Houston – with mighty Enron's Crooked E now crumbled – has much more going for it on the genuine retail shopping front than on bogus energy valuations. Among best known brick and mortar places to splurge: The Galleria, in Uptown Houston at Loop 610 and Westheimer Road, with more than 375 stores and restaurants including Neiman Marcus and Tiffany & Co., plus Macy's, Lord & Taylor, Saks Fifth Avenue, Nordstrom and Foley's. Next to the Galleria are the exclusive Highland Village, with Restoration Hardware and Kiehls, and the European-style Uptown Park with the Cigar Vault and The Water Closet, among other retailers. The Shops at Houston Center, downtown, includes JoS. A. Bank, Worth the Weight, TMobile, and Waldenbooks, plus eateries like Twisted Fork, Massa's Seafood Grill, Ninfa's and Doozo Dumplings & Noodles.
Montrose, near downtown, brims with art galleries and vintage clothing stores. Antiques are also plentiful in Montrose as well as at the Antique Center of Texas, off Loop 610 and at Old Town Spring, featuring dozens of shops in revitalized historic homes. Also popular for vintage items is the twice monthly outdoor Back Bay Market, south of downtown near Clear Lake. Small galleries are abundant around Rice University, the Museum District, the Upper Kirby District, the Heights, and downtown. North of Houston, the historic village of Old Town Spring boasts dozens of shops, galleries, and eateries. The Rice Village Shopping District, with the Village Arcade at its core, dates to the 1930s and spreads out over a dozen blocks with retail shops, boutiques and business services. Near tony River Oaks, the River Oaks Shopping Center boasts more than 60 high-end shops and galleries, plus the create-it-yourself Mad Potter. Katy Mills Mall features outlets like Off 5th Saks Fifth Avenue, Bose Factory Outlet and Gap Factory Outlet. In Bend County, First Colony Mall features Dillard's and J.C. Penny. Altogether more than 30 malls are positioned across Greater Houston.
